The ultimate goal for all Grateful Dead cover bands is to be a part of that collective energy where the crowds spins and dances and the music plays the band. The Grateful Dead had these songs that were like frames around a work of art, where the art was alive somehow and was being recreated and reworked each time the painters picked up the idea.
The goal for us as musicians is to respect the ground we are walking on by learning the material well, being committed to reaching each time like they did, and to be inspired to new ideas and ways of playing the songs. Being able to create new music in the moment and feeding on the energy of the band and a crowd is the ultimate prize for bands doing this music. We did not hold auditions to find the best Bobby, the best Phil or the perfect Jerry. We reached out to friends who know and truly love the music and are drawn together through the greatest American song book as friends. Our friendships are first and that collective energy keeps us focused on delivering something good.
When we formed in January 2024, there wasn’t even an intention for one guy to do all the Jerry parts, or the other to be Bobby, we just started playing the songs together and over a few weeks it started to become clear who was drawn to which vocal lines, which style of playing was more conducive to certain parts. The band formed quickly because the hang was good and the groundwork has been laid through practice, lots and lots of practice.
The best songs, talented musicians and great friends!
